Butterfree #33 is one of those Jungle-era cards that just makes you smile when you flip to it, that big cartoon butterfly rendered by Kagemaru Himeno back in 1999. It's an Uncommon, so it was never meant to be a chase card, but nostalgia and the charm of the Jungle set keep collectors coming back to ask about Butterfree value all these years later. Raw copies are cheap and easy to find, but as you'll see, the story changes fast once grading enters the picture.

The collector's take on Butterfree

Is Butterfree worth grading?

Here's the honest answer on Butterfree price if you're wondering whether to send yours in: a raw, ungraded copy sits at $2, while a PSA 10 comes in at $92, which works out to 41.3x the raw price. That's a real jump, but hitting a true gem mint 10 on a 1999 card isn't guaranteed, print lines, centering and edge wear from that era can trip you up even on a card that looks perfect to the naked eye. Grading costs money and takes time, and a Grade 9 lands at $237, oddly enough sitting well above the 10 in this case, so it's worth checking current sub-grade values before you commit a raw card to a grading company. If you've already got a sharp-looking copy sitting in a binder, it can be worth the gamble, but go in with your eyes open about the odds and the fees.

How rare is Butterfree?

Across all grading companies combined, there are 1,226 graded copies of Butterfree on record, and only 138 of those have earned a PSA 10. That's a fairly small slice at the very top, which explains why gem mint copies command such a premium over the raw card. For a card this old, population numbers like these tell you plenty about how hard it is to find one that survived over two decades in true gem condition, and that scarcity is really what's driving the gap between the $2 raw price and the $92 PSA 10 figure.

Where can you pull Butterfree?

We've tracked 85 recorded pulls of Butterfree across pack sites including tilt-rips, collector-crypt, courtyard and mnstr, with the biggest single pull coming in at $452. It's shown up in a mix of packs, from the Pokemon Dime Pack and Elite Pokémon Gacha Pack to the Pokémon Pro Pack, Pack 5 and the Starter Pokémon Gacha Pack, so it's not locked to any one product. That said, opening packs is still a gamble and most rips don't cover their cost, Butterfree included, so treat any pull as a nice bonus rather than a plan, and know that PackSpy's data here comes from actual recorded opens, not a price guide's best guess.

Questions people ask

How much is Butterfree worth?+

A raw, ungraded Butterfree #33 from Jungle is valued at $2. Grading changes the picture quite a bit though, with a Grade 9 sitting at $237 and a PSA 10 at $92, so condition and certification make a real difference to what it's worth.

Is Butterfree worth grading?+

It depends on the copy you have. The PSA 10 value of $92 is 41.3 times the raw price of $2, which sounds tempting, but only 138 of the 1,226 graded copies out there have hit that gem mint 10, so it's not a sure thing and grading fees eat into any profit if the card comes back lower.

How much is a PSA 10 Butterfree worth?+

A PSA 10 Butterfree is worth $92, a solid step up from the $2 raw price. Just keep in mind that gem mint 10s are a small slice of the total population, only 138 out of 1,226 graded copies, so getting one isn't guaranteed even if the card looks flawless before you send it in.
