Staryu, that little starfish with the shining red core, has always been a fan favorite, and this Series III #120 printing from the 2023 Japanese Vending set is a nice one to have in a binder. It's a Common card illustrated by Arai Kiriko, so it was never meant to be rare, but plenty of collectors still search for a current Staryu value before deciding whether to buy, sell, or send one off for grading. Right now a raw copy runs about $16, which makes it an easy card to pick up if you just want one for the collection.

The collector's take on Staryu

Is Staryu worth grading?

Here's the honest answer on whether Staryu is worth grading: a raw copy sits at $16, a Grade 9 comes in at $258, and a PSA 10 lands at $254, which works out to roughly 16.1 times what the raw card is worth once it comes back gem mint. That's a real jump, no question. But grading costs money upfront, takes time, and there's always a chance the card comes back with a crease or a corner ding you didn't notice, dropping it right back to raw value. If you've got a copy that looks clean under a loupe, grading can make sense given that multiplier, but if there's any doubt about centering or surface, it might be smarter to enjoy it raw or sell it as is rather than gamble on the process.

How rare is Staryu?

Across every copy that's been graded, there are 556 Staryu cards on record, and of those, 254 have come back as PSA 10. That's a meaningfully large slice landing at the top grade, which tells you this particular Staryu isn't one of those cards where gem mint is nearly impossible to find. It also helps explain why the PSA 10 and Grade 9 prices sit so close together here, since with a decent chunk of the population already at the top, a perfect copy doesn't carry the same scarcity premium you'd see on a tougher card to grade.

Where can you pull Staryu?

We've tracked Staryu getting pulled 72 times across pack sites we monitor, including tilt-rips, collector-crypt, and courtyard, which gives a real sense of how often this card actually shows up rather than relying on guesswork. It's turned up in a mix of products, from the Pokemon Dime Pack and Pokémon Pro Pack to the Starter Pokémon Gacha Pack, Pokémon Starter Pack, and Elite Pokémon Gacha Pack, and the biggest pull we've recorded for it was worth $86. That spread tells you Staryu isn't locked to one specific product, it shows up here and there across budget and starter-style packs, which is worth knowing if you're chasing this one instead of just buying it outright. Just remember that opening packs is a gamble by nature, and most rips don't come close to covering what you paid, so treat any pull as a bonus rather than the plan.

Questions people ask

How much is Staryu worth?+

A raw, ungraded Staryu from Series III #120 is valued at $16 right now. That price reflects its status as a Common card from the 2023 Japanese Vending set, so it's an affordable pickup whether you're completing a set or just like the artwork.

Is Staryu worth grading?+

It can be, since a PSA 10 sells for $254 compared to $16 raw, about a 16.1x jump. With 254 of the 556 graded copies already sitting at PSA 10, gem mint isn't a long shot for this card, but grading still costs money and carries risk if your copy has flaws you missed.

How much is a PSA 10 Staryu worth?+

A PSA 10 Staryu is valued at $254, just slightly under the $258 seen for a Grade 9 copy. With 254 PSA 10s recorded out of 556 total graded, gem mint copies exist in solid numbers, which keeps the price from climbing much higher than the near-perfect grade.
