Blastoise has always been one of those Pokemon that collectors gravitate toward, and this Reverse Holo #31 from the 2012 Japanese Tag All Stars set is a nice example of why. It's a Rare card illustrated by Satoshi Shirai, the kind of artwork that makes the reverse holo foil pattern really pop behind the classic starter evolution. If you're trying to figure out Blastoise value right now, the short answer is that it's an affordable card raw, but the picture changes quite a bit once grading enters the conversation.

The collector's take on Blastoise

Is Blastoise worth grading?

Here's the honest breakdown on whether Blastoise is worth grading: a raw, ungraded copy sits at $4, a Grade 9 comes in at $14, and a true PSA 10 gem mint jumps all the way up to $107, which works out to 26.7x the raw price. That's a real jump, no question. But gem mint is genuinely hard to hit, print lines, edge wear and centering issues from 2012 Japanese stock can knock a card down a grade fast, and grading fees plus shipping and turnaround time eat into any profit if you don't land that 10. If you've got a copy that looks flawless under a light, it might be worth the gamble. If it's got any soft corners or surface wear, it's probably better loved as a raw collector's piece than sent off for grading.

How rare is Blastoise?

Only 203 copies of this card have been graded in total, and out of those, 151 are PSA 10. That's a pretty telling number, it means the vast majority of graded copies that exist are already sitting at the top grade, which tells you this card either grades well when people bother to send it in, or only the strongest copies get submitted in the first place. Either way, a population this small keeps Blastoise value fairly tight, there simply aren't a lot of graded copies floating around for buyers to choose from.

Where can you pull Blastoise?

This is where PackSpy's tracking actually tells you something a price guide can't. We haven't recorded a single pull of this Blastoise across any of the pack sites we track, which lines up with it being a rarer, higher-end pull from an older Japanese set. Practically speaking, that means your realistic path to owning one isn't ripping packs and hoping, it's buying on the secondary market from someone who already pulled or graded a copy. Worth remembering too: opening packs is a gamble in general, and most rips don't come close to covering what you paid, so don't chase this one through packs expecting it to show up.

Questions people ask

How much is Blastoise worth?+

A raw, ungraded Blastoise Reverse Holo #31 is valued at $4. Get it graded and the number climbs, a Grade 9 sits at $14, and a PSA 10 gem mint copy reaches $107. So the answer really depends on the condition and whether it's been graded.

Is Blastoise worth grading?+

It can be, since a PSA 10 is worth 26.7x the raw price. But gem mint copies are tough to pull off, and with only 203 total graded copies out there, it's clear not every submission lands a perfect grade. Send it in if the card looks genuinely clean, otherwise the grading cost may not pay off.

Why is the Blastoise Reverse Holo #31 print worth more than the standard one?+

Reverse holo prints tend to catch collector interest because the foil pattern covers the card background instead of just the artwork, giving it a different shine that some people prefer over the standard non-holo version. Combined with Satoshi Shirai's illustration and the card's rarity in the Tag All Stars set, it's the kind of print that stands out in a binder, which naturally keeps demand and value a bit higher.
