Gengar has always been one of the more fun holo pulls to land, and this version from Chilling Reign, illustrated by Aya Kusube, is a nice reminder why. It came out in 2021 as a Holo Rare, so it's not the rarest thing in the set, but it's got that classic ghost-type charm collectors keep coming back for. If you're trying to nail down Gengar's value right now, the short answer is: modest raw, a real jump once it's graded well.

The collector's take on Gengar

Is Gengar worth grading?

Here's the honest math: a raw, ungraded copy sits around $4, a Grade 9 climbs to $24, and a PSA 10 gem mint copy is valued at $429, which works out to roughly 104.2 times what the raw card is worth. That's a huge spread, and it's exactly why people ask if Gengar is worth grading. The catch is that hitting a true gem mint 10 isn't guaranteed just because the card looks clean to your eye. Grading costs money and takes time, and if the card comes back a 9 instead of a 10, you're looking at a much smaller return. If you've got a copy that's sharp cornered with clean edges and centered well, it's worth considering. If it's got soft corners or print lines, save your grading fee and enjoy it raw.

How rare is it?

We don't have a hard population count to share for this one, but the size of that raw-to-PSA-10 gap tells its own story. A near 104x multiplier usually means true gem mint copies are genuinely tough to find, not because the card is ultra rare in the set, but because holo surfaces from this era show wear easily and centering can be inconsistent. Chilling Reign had a healthy print run, so raw copies aren't hard to track down. It's the flawless ones that thin out fast.

Where to pull it

We've tracked 38 recorded pulls of this Gengar across pack sites like collector-crypt and mnstr, and it's shown up in a mix of pack types including the Elite Pokémon Gacha Pack, Legendary Pokémon Gacha Pack, Starter Pokémon Gacha Pack, Grail Pokémon Gacha Pack, and Pack 2. The biggest single pull we've logged for it hit $2,600, which shows how much a great grade or a lucky moment can swing the value. Most rips don't land anywhere near that though, so treat pack opening as entertainment first. If you just want the card itself, buying a graded copy on the secondary market is usually the more predictable route.

Questions people ask

How much is Gengar worth?+

A raw, ungraded copy is valued around $4, a Grade 9 sits at $24, and a PSA 10 gem mint copy reaches $429. The value really depends on condition and whether it's been graded, so check where your copy falls before assuming its worth.

Is Gengar worth grading?+

It can be, since a PSA 10 is worth about 104.2x the raw price. But gem mint copies are genuinely hard to hit, and grading costs money with no guaranteed outcome, so only send in copies that already look sharp and well centered.

What set is Gengar from?+

This Gengar is card #57 from the Chilling Reign set, released in 2021. It's a Holo Rare illustrated by Aya Kusube, which makes it a fun, affordable pull for collectors who love the classic ghost-type look.
