The collector's take on Gyarados
Is Gyarados worth grading?
Here is the honest math: a raw, ungraded Gyarados runs about $19, while a PSA 10 gem mint copy is sitting at $2,320, which works out to roughly 121.4 times the raw price. That is a big jump, and it is tempting to think every copy in your binder is a lottery ticket. But Base Set cards from 1999 have had a lot of years to pick up whitening, edge wear, and print lines, so hitting a true gem mint 10 is genuinely tough, and a Grade 9 at $260 is a far more realistic outcome for most well-kept copies. Grading costs money and takes time, and there is no refund if your card comes back a 7 or 8, so only send in copies that look sharp to your eye under good light, corners and centering especially. If your Gyarados looks clean but you are on the fence, it is worth remembering that grading is a bet, not a guarantee.
How rare is Gyarados?
Gyarados carries the Rare designation in Base Set, which already puts it a notch above the Commons and Uncommons that flooded most packs back in 1999. Base Set itself is one of the most heavily opened, heavily collected sets ever printed, so while raw copies are not hard to track down, well-preserved ones that could survive a grading review are a different story. That scarcity at the top end is exactly why the price gap between a raw card and a PSA 10 stretches as wide as it does, the closer you get to flawless, the fewer copies exist to fill that tier.
Where can you pull Gyarados?
This is where PackSpy's own data comes in handy, since we track real pack openings across sites rather than just quoting a price guide. We have recorded Gyarados pulled 200 or more times across collector-crypt, mnstr, courtyard, tilt-rips, and packs, so it is not some myth of a card, people are genuinely still pulling it. It has turned up in packs like the Water Pack, Legendary Pokemon Gacha Pack, Pack 2, Wildcard Basic Pack, and Elite Pokemon Gacha Pack, and the biggest single pull we have logged for it came in at $33,020. That said, opening packs chasing a specific card is still a gamble, most rips do not come close to covering their cost, so treat any pull as a bonus rather than a plan.
Questions people ask
How much is Gyarados worth?+
A raw, ungraded Gyarados from Base Set is worth about $19 right now. Graded copies climb quickly from there, with a Grade 9 valued around $260 and a PSA 10 reaching $2,320, so condition makes a real difference to what this card is worth.
Is Gyarados worth grading?+
It can be, since a PSA 10 sells for roughly 121.4 times what a raw copy fetches. But gem mint grades are hard to land on Base Set cards from 1999, so only send in copies that look genuinely clean, and go in knowing grading fees are non refundable if it comes back lower than a 10.
What set is Gyarados from?+
Gyarados #6 is from the original Base Set, released in 1999. It is a Rare card illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, making it one of the more sought after pulls from that founding set.
