How to work out what a Pokémon card is worth

Most people ask the wrong question first. They ask what the card is worth, when the card does not have one price. It has three, and which one applies to you depends on a plastic case.

Find the exact card, not the Pokémon

Charizard is not a card. It is 135 separate cards in this index alone, spread across 84 different sets, and they are not remotely worth the same. The number in the corner and the set name are what separate a $343,000 Base Set first edition from a $12 reprint of the same artwork. Search the name here, then use the set chips to narrow to the one in your hand.

Read the right column

Raw is the card ungraded, as it sits in your binder. PSA 9 and PSA 10 are what it makes once a grading company has sealed it in a slab and called it near-mint or gem mint. Unless your card is already graded, the raw price is your price.

Understand the gap before you send anything away

Across the 9,621 cards where we hold both figures, the median PSA 10 sells for about 15 times its raw price. That gap is why people grade. It is also a trap: you only collect it if the card actually comes back a 10, and most do not. Grading costs money and takes months whatever grade it earns, so the honest way to read the PSA 10 column is as a ceiling, not a valuation.

Treat every price as a moving number

These are real sale prices, refreshed daily, not a fixed book value. A card that sold for $400 last month can sell for $250 today because one collector listed three of them at once. Every card page here carries its own price history so you can see whether the number you are looking at is a trend or a spike.

Questions

How much is my Pokémon card worth?

Search its name above and match the set and the card number to the one you are holding. You will get three prices: raw, PSA 9 and PSA 10. If your card is not in a graded slab, the raw price is the one that applies to you. We hold 10,558 cards across 727 sets, so most cards worth money are in here.

Is this card price checker free?

Yes, and there is no sign-up, no account and no limit on searches. We make money when someone follows a link to a pack site, not from anyone checking what a card is worth.

Where do the prices come from?

Real completed sales, refreshed daily, not asking prices. An asking price tells you what one hopeful seller wants. A sale price tells you what somebody actually paid, which is the only number worth putting on a page.

What is the difference between raw, PSA 9 and PSA 10?

Raw means ungraded, exactly as the card comes out of a pack. PSA 9 and PSA 10 mean a grading company has examined it, judged it near-mint or gem mint, and sealed it in a numbered case. The jump is large: across the 9,621 cards where we hold both, the median PSA 10 goes for about 15 times the raw price.

Should I get my card graded?

Only if the gap between its raw and PSA 10 price is much larger than the grading fee, and only if the card is genuinely clean: sharp corners, centred, no surface scratches under a light. A card that comes back a 9 instead of a 10 can be worth a fraction of what you hoped, and you pay the fee either way.

Why is your price different from the one I saw on eBay?

An eBay listing is what someone is asking. Our figure is what cards like yours have actually sold for. The two disagree most on expensive cards, where optimistic listings can sit unsold for months at double the real price.
