The collector's take on Gengar
Is Gengar worth grading?
So is Gengar worth grading? Here's the honest answer: a PSA 10 sells for $3,925, which works out to 45.1x what you'd get for the raw card at $87. That's a real jump, and it's the kind of number that gets people excited about sending cards in. But gem mint is genuinely hard to hit on a 1999 Fossil card, corners soften, centering drifts, and print lines show up more than you'd like on close inspection. A Grade 9 still brings $664, which is solid, but it's a fraction of what that perfect 10 pays. Before you ship it off, factor in grading fees and turnaround time, and go in knowing that most raw copies won't come back as a 10. If you already own a sharp, well-centered copy, it's worth the gamble. If you're on the fence, that's your answer right there.
How rare is Gengar?
Across every grading company combined, there are 15,735 graded copies of Gengar on record, which sounds like a lot until you look at the top of the pile. Only 130 of those are PSA 10. That's a tiny sliver sitting at the very peak of a fairly large population, and it's exactly why the price gap between raw and gem mint is so wide. When a card has been graded this many times over 25 years but still can't produce many perfect copies, you know the grading itself is the bottleneck, not the supply of the card.
Where can you pull Gengar?
This is where PackSpy's own data comes in, because we track real pulls across pack sites, not just price guides. Gengar has been recorded pulled 200 or more times across courtyard, collector-crypt, mnstr, tilt-rips, and packs, and the biggest single pull we've logged came in at $2,733. It's shown up in a handful of specific packs worth knowing if you're hunting for it yourself: Pokémon Master Pack, Legendary Pokémon Gacha Pack, Starter Pokémon Gacha Pack, Pokémon VIP (Spicy), and Elite Pokémon Gacha Pack. Worth saying plainly, opening packs is a gamble and most rips don't beat what you paid in, but Gengar is at least a card that has proven it shows up often enough to chase.
