How does Boxed.gg work?

By Mumbles · Published Nov 7, 2026 · Checked Oct 22, 2026 · 9 min read

The short answer

On Boxed.gg you buy Gems, about 100 to the dollar, and open a box. One card comes out at the odds shown on the box page. Ship it, sell it back or swap it. By Boxed's own odds, a dollar spent returns about 85 cents.

How does Boxed.gg work? It is a mystery box website for trading cards. You open a digital box in your browser, and one real card comes out. The site is Pokémon first, with Magic: The Gathering, One Piece and sports boxes beside them.

We watch Boxed every day. Our collector saves the wins of $10 or more that the site's own public feed shows. It also reads the odds of every box that turns up there. That gives us a number Boxed does not print. Weighted by player spend, the 1,187 Boxed boxes we read were set to pay back 84.6% of their price on 21 October 2026, by Boxed's own odds.

How does Boxed.gg work, step by step?

  1. Sign up. A new account gets a free box, with no deposit and no code.
  2. Buy Gems. Gems are the site's own money. Boxed's help centre puts one Gem at about one US cent, so 100 Gems is about $1. You can pay by card or with crypto.
  3. Pick a box. Each box page lists every card inside, with its value in Gems and your chance of pulling it.
  4. Open it. You can open 1 to 5 boxes at a time, or run a free demo open first. Each box gives you exactly one card.
  5. Decide what to do with the card. Sell it back for Gems, ship it to your door or swap it on the Exchange. You can also trade it in the Marketplace for a graded slab (a card sealed in a plastic case with a condition grade) or a CS2 skin (a Counter-Strike 2 game item).
  6. Check the result, if you like. Before you open, Boxed shows a scrambled version of its secret code. It reveals the code itself 24 hours later, so you can prove the result was fixed in advance.

That last step is called provably fair. It proves the draw was honest, not that the odds are generous. Our guide to provably fair explains the difference.

Can you withdraw money from Boxed.gg? Only as a card, a CS2 skin or ETH

Everything on Boxed is priced in Gems. Boxed's terms say Gems have no cash value. You cannot withdraw them, sell them or turn them back into dollars, and every Gem purchase is final. You also cannot sell or trade a card to another player, so every deal is between you and Boxed.

So a card's value leaves the site in one of three ways. You get the card itself, shipped to you. You trade it in the Marketplace for a CS2 skin, sent to your Steam account. Or you get crypto, paid only in ETH (the Ethereum coin). Crypto needs ID and phone checks, and Boxed's risk team reviews crypto access by hand. How you have paid for Gems before decides whether that access comes by itself or only when you ask.

Every Boxed.gg box lists each card, its value and its chance

The chances on a box page add up to 100%. A spice meter on the page rates how swingy the box is.

Take the 151 box, built around the Scarlet & Violet 151 set. On 21 October 2026 it held 55 cards. At the top sat a Charizard ex 199/165, valued at 38,632 Gems ($386.32), at a 0.02% chance. That is one open in 5,000. At the bottom sat a Diglett, a Magmar, a Magikarp and a Raichu, each worth between 13 and 37 cents. Each had a 5% chance, so together they cover one open in five.

Our records put the box's price at 429 Gems ($4.29) that day. By Boxed's own values, 86% of opens give a card worth less than that. A rare few give far more. Our next daily read put the same box at 447 Gems on 22 October. Its payback stayed at about 85% on both days.

How does Boxed.gg make money? It keeps about 15%

A box makes money for Boxed because its price is higher than the average value of what comes out. That gap is the house edge, the share the site keeps on average. Boxed does not print it, but it prints each card's value and its chance. Multiply each pair and add them up, and you get what the box pays back on average.

Our collector does that sum for every box it sees, vending machines included. On 21 October 2026 it read 1,187 of them. Weighted by what players have spent on each, they came to 84.6%, so Boxed keeps about 15 cents of each dollar. About four dollars in every five went into boxes that now pay back between 82.5% and 85.5%.

Not every box is the same. 715 of the 1,187 were set to pay back 80.5% or less. They are mostly quiet boxes, with under 4% of all the spending, so they hardly move the average. But they matter if you pick one, so check the odds on the box you open, not the site average.

Two honest notes. The values are Boxed's own, and a card's Gem value is what Boxed pays you if you sell it back. And 85% is an average, so most single opens pay far less. When a pull is worth less than you paid, Luckback gives you Shards to spend in its own market. That softens a miss.

How do Boxed.gg battles, vending machines and the Forge work?

Battles put players on the same boxes at the same time. Everyone opens one box per round, and the results are compared at the end. Formats run from 1v1 (one player against another) up to 3v3, plus 1v5. There are four modes. In Crazy Mode, for one, the lowest total wins.

Vending machines are the premium game. You pay per pull from a machine stocked mostly with graded cards and slabs. A vending pull ships only to the US, Canada and the UK.

The Forge lets players build their own boxes. The builder picks the cards and the odds, and Boxed sets the price from those. The builder then earns about 1% to 3% of the Gems other players spend on that box. Forge boxes use the same provably fair system as Boxed's own boxes.

What comes out of Boxed.gg: 82,906 wins of $10 or more in 30 days

In the 30 days from 22 September to 21 October 2026, we recorded 82,906 Boxed wins worth $10 or more. That is about 2,760 a day. Together they were worth $4.6 million in Boxed's own card values, and 330 of them were worth $1,000 or more. Boxes gave 87% of those wins and vending machines 13%.

In the 48 hours to midnight UTC on 22 October, 77% of the wins we recorded were Pokémon. Magic gave 14% and One Piece 6%. Sports, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Riftbound, CS2 skins and a few others shared the rest.

Drops labelled as packs first appeared in our records of the feed on 19 October 2026, from sets like Prismatic Evolutions and 151. We have not tried them yet, so this guide does not explain how they work.

Our Boxed feed shows good drops only. The opens that paid little never appear in it, so it cannot tell you what Boxed pays back. That is why our payback figure comes from Boxed's printed odds instead. The wins show that the site is busy. On average, players still lose money on Boxed, as on every box site.

Boxed.gg shipping costs 550 Gems in the US and takes one to three weeks

Cards you pull ship from Boxed's US facility. They come double sleeved (in two plastic sleeves) and in a top loader (a stiff plastic holder), inside a tracked bubble mailer. One withdrawal can hold up to 75 cards. You pay the fee in Gems:

Where it shipsFee in GemsAbout
United States550$5.50
Canada, United Kingdom1,000$10
Australia, New Zealand and 13 European countries2,500$25
Mexico3,000$30
Spain3,500$35

Boxed's shipping page says cards ship one to three weeks after you withdraw them. Cards marked with a turtle are in high demand and can take up to five weeks. Outside the US, you may also owe import duties or taxes.

One rule helps. For seven days after you pull a card, Boxed will not charge you extra to withdraw it if its market price goes up. Plain sense helps too: a 40-cent common card is never worth $5.50 of postage. Save up good cards, ship them together, and sell the small ones back.

The Boxed.gg free box has one catch

New accounts get a free box at sign-up, and daily free boxes unlock as you level up. The catch is easy to miss. Boxed's help centre says the card from the free sign-up box stays locked at first. You cannot sell it back or ship it until you have bought at least 500 Gems, about $5. Until then you can hold it or show it on your profile.

Who runs Boxed.gg, and where it is open

Boxed.gg is run by Loot Labs, Inc., a company based in Seattle, Washington. The games investor BITKRAFT backs it, and the site has been open since 2023. Whether that makes it legit is a question our full Boxed.gg review answers.

You must be 18 or over to use Boxed. Its help centre also says the site is not available in Michigan, Washington, Louisiana or South Carolina. Cards ship to about 20 countries across North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. These are Boxed's own rules, not our ruling on the law.
